About Keep It Constitutional:
Keep It Constitutional helps people learn about their rights under the Constitution and how to put their rights into action.
The campaign is aimed at teaching South African high school learners about the Constitution and their rights under it. The campaign aims to help people in South Africa understand the basic principles of the Constitution. Keep It Constitutional is an educational campaign, run by the Foundation for Human Rights (FHR).
Why is it important to know your rights?
It is important to know your rights and how you can access them so that you are not vulnerable to abuses of those rights. Abuses of your rights goes against the Constitution and are against the law.
Why was Keep It Constitutional launched?
Research by the FHR has found that very few South Africans know about the Constitution and their rights within it. The Baseline Survey, released in 2018, found that only slightly more than 50% of South Africans had even heard of the existence of the Constitution or the Bill of Rights. The study also found that many of those who had heard of the Constitution didn’t know what it was or how it helped them.
The study also found that a majority of those who did have knowledge of the Constitution obtained this knowledge at school. This is why Keep It Constitutional is primarily aimed at high school learners. However, many of the videos, podcasts, blog posts and lesson plans on our website will be useful for all ages.
Keep It Constitutional gives people information about their rights, the broader context of the Constitution, and how to put their rights into action.
